Anti-seizure Medicines

It may seem odd to discuss anti-seizure medicines here, but they are often used to stabilize mood and behavior. Klonopin and Ativan are often used in this way. They work on several different brain chemicals to ''cool down'' nerve cells. Depakene, Depakote, Tegretol and others are used in this way. Some doctors will claim many or even all behavior problems are really seizures or seizure-like.

But unless a EEG (picture of brain activity) really shows that seizures are occuring, it may be unwise to sedate or cool down nerve cells with these medicines. Generally I hope a more specific and accurate diagnosis can be given. With better diagnosis comes more appropriate medicines, and better long term results.

Sometimes, seizures are present, and sometimes they do cause unusual behavior. But this sort of seizure is rare, whereas schizophrenia and other conditions are quite widespread. There are about 10 million schizophrenics in India, making it a common condition.

Anti-Anxiety Medicines

These medicines are often a part of mental health treatment. Anxiety, which is severe agitation and worry, can occur alone or with other conditions. Buspar is an old favorite and works well for many people. It takes several weeks to take effect, but is a mild and generally safe medicine.
